Unemployment down in Florida, economic activity rises – good for Tampa area businesses

19 Mar 2013

Good news for Tampa area businesses?

We think so as drops in unemployment are generally tied to increased spending and consumer confidence.

This “loosening” of the purse strings and increased cash flow for local Tampa companies means that business decisions – like making an office move or expanding the office – happens more often.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Florida unemployment drop 7.8 in January

Florida added 15,400 jobs in January alone. Trade, transportation and utilities — a broad category that includes every retailer from auto dealers to furniture stores — has led the way, adding 35,300 jobs since January 2012. Even the decimated construction industry is growing again as the housing market regains its footing.

“Everything we do is geared toward job creation. Today we have more proof that it’s working,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement Monday. “We have added more than 280,000 private-sector jobs over the last two years, and as we continue to focus on greater economic growth, we will see even more jobs created.”

When cash flow is tighter, decisions about expansion or office relocation are put on hold. Hopefully this is a trend that continues here in Tampa, St. Pete and Sarasota.
