How Much Voice Does the Younger Generation of Office Workers, The Millennials, Have on Office Relocations?

With 36% of the workforce being made up of Millennials by 2020 (and with many companies already at this number or higher depending on the industry), some are asking how they “sell office relocation” to this younger audience?

UrbanBound.com gives us some good insight, but before we determine “how’ let’s figure out “who” Millennials are.

Who are Millennials? These are younger folks in your office who were born between 1981 and 1996. So today in 2018, their age range can be from 22 to about 37 (give or take).

For Florida based businesses, understanding who Millennials are and how best to manage their output and expectations is important. While more companies seem to move to Florida — instead of out of Florida — company management may be looking at how to assimilate employees or handle regional moves.

As UrbanBound says (and perhaps a little tongue in cheek), “More and more companies are moving to more favorable locations, and most want their bright, young, Millennial workers to assist operations in the far-flung office. However, because Millennial decision-making can be somewhat erratic from time to time, companies should consider weighting the choice with tactics known to effectively motivate the younger working generation.

How much voice will these Millennials have? It will certainly depend on each company based on the ages of their executive leadership, the company culture and makup, their industry and their intended objectives (office relocations always have objectives).

One objective is to provide a better lifestyle for current employees. Another is to be located in a place where skills and culture already exist. Either way, the future of most companies are these younger workers and that is who company leaders hope to satisfy and impress.

So…how does UrbanBound say to “sell office relocation”?

  • Just ask them
  • Treat them appropriately
  • Offer their unique (but coveted) benefits
  • Hire persuasive speakers
  • Target mentorship programs
  • Promote them first
